Dinner with Dickens Reading Group
A guided reading course with The Ink Drinkers
If you know anything about me, I am currently in my classics era (and no I don’t mean the classic classics… I’m not there yet). I’m talking about 18th, 19th century literature. English, American, Russian, French… I’m not picky.
So next year I want to celebrate that.
I know the Ink Drinkers has a million book clubs and you’re probably thinking “Bryanna, I can’t keep up with all of them. My wallet and space in my apartment are not thanking me at the moment.” I understand. Maybe this new group will replace another one. Maybe not.
Starting in 2026, the Ink Drinkers will be introducing “Dinner with Dickens.” We will meet 4x during the year to discuss 4 different titles by Charles Dickens.
We will meet Sunday evenings for dinner. Joining itself will be free, all that I ask is that you bring something to contribute to dinner, whether that be wine, dessert or snacks. We will chat, drink and eat. We will laugh. We will cry. Maybe. That could just be the wine.
How it works:
Think of this like the college course you’ve always wanted to take, but only the fun parts. All the reading, none of the exams.
The main idea of this is to go a little bit deeper than other bookclubs. We will not only dive into Dickens, but we’ll also discuss Victorian literature, culture, politics, etc, so get a more in-depth idea of what Dickens was writing about. I will provide background non-fiction reading materials (short essays, chapters, etc…), but these are of course optional. It’s up to you how deep you want to go (but don’t we all love going down a rabbit hole every now and again?)
The course will be set up in chronological order of his works, and we will only read one very long novel (you know… in Dickens’ terms…). We’ll begin with some non-fiction writings of his, to get to know his inspirations. The final novel will be his last one that he wrote just before his death, and unfortunately never finished.
Join one, join them all, it’s entirely up to you!
