Before We Meet: A correspondence project
What is it?
Some things are better said first.
A seasonal handwritten correspondence circle in Zürich.
What if you got to know someone without seeing their face, scrolling through their photographs, or knowing what they do for a living?
What if, instead, you began with a letter?
Before We Meet is a small, seasonal correspondence circle for people who want to slow down, look inward, and connect with someone beyond the usual introductions. For twelve weeks, you’ll exchange handwritten letters with one person you haven’t met, guided by thoughtful prompts and the simple ritual of putting pen to paper.
No profiles to perfect. No pressure to impress. Just two people, a little curiosity, and the space to say something real.
This season: The Autumn Exchange
Twelve people. Six pairs. Twelve weeks of letters.
Hosted in collaboration with Pile of Books, Zürich, the first season is an invitation to rediscover the pleasure of a slower kind of connection.
Participation in this first season is free. All you need is a willingness to be curious, to write honestly, and to make room for another person’s words.

Applications close October 31, 2026.
How does it work?
01 — Apply
Tell us a little about yourself, what draws you to this experience, and the kinds of conversations you hope to have. You’re welcome to participate under a pseudonym.
02 — Get paired
A small group of participants will be thoughtfully paired for the season. You’ll be introduced to your correspondent through the exchange, not through a photograph or a list of personal details.
03 — Write, weekly
For approximately twelve weeks, you and your correspondent will exchange handwritten letters, one week at a time. Prompts will offer a place to begin, but where the conversation goes is yours to decide.
04 — Decide what comes next
At the end of the season, you may choose to reveal your identity or meet in person, but only if both of you agree. There is no obligation to share your real name, exchange contact details, or meet. Some connections are meaningful even when they remain on paper.
Who is this for?
For the person who misses receiving something other than a bill in the post.
For the person who has a hundred thoughts they rarely get to finish out loud.
For the person who wants to meet others without the usual expectations.
For the person who is curious about what can happen when we let connection unfold slowly.
You don’t need to be a writer. You don’t need to have something extraordinary to say. You only need to be willing to show up, week after week, with a letter.
A few things worth knowing
This is a correspondence experience, not a dating service.
Your correspondent will know you by the name you choose to share.
You are never required to disclose personal details or discuss anything that feels uncomfortable.
Identity reveals and in-person meetings are entirely optional and must be mutually agreed upon.
Respect, privacy, and consistency are essential to the experience.
Before applying, please read the Privacy Notice and Participant Guidelines so you understand how the exchange works and what participation involves.
