The idea of working with one author all year was something I had been wanting to do for a while, but I wasn’t sure how it was going to go.

Turns out… it was a friggin blast. I don’t know why I ever doubted it. You guys asked for round two, so here we go….

Over the year of 2026 we got to know Dickens better as an author and a person. We learned about Victorian politics, eating habits, leisure, clothing & how Dickens shaped London. We had good food, good wine and even better conversation.

So we’re doing it again. Another year, another author.

This one is very close to my heart. This author changed my life about 10 years ago when I first discovered her. She is an icon, for me as a woman, reader and writer. I am beyond excited to get reacquainted with her after all this time.

Let’s have a séance with Shirley Jackson.

How it works: 

Think of this like the college course you’ve always wanted to take, but only the fun parts. All the reading, none of the exams. 

The main idea of this is to go a little bit deeper than other bookclubs. We will not only dive into her literature, but we’ll also discuss 20th century American literature, culture, politics, etc, to get a more in-depth idea of what Jackson was writing about. I will provide background non-fiction reading materials (short essays, chapters, etc…), but these are of course optional. It’s up to you how deep you want to go (but don’t we all love going down a rabbit hole every now and again?)

We will read 3 novels and 1 short story collection. All her works are relatively short, so the reading will not be too demanding.

We will meet Sundays at 6pm for a potluck dinner.

We will only be meeting 4x throughout the year. The tentative schedule & order of reading materials is:

March: The Lottery and Other Stories

June: The Sundial

September: The Haunting of Hill House

December: We Have Always Lived in the Castle

I will provide specific dates as we get closer.

I will have the books ready at the shop for purchase well in advance to give you plenty of time.
