Welcome to Pile of Books’ first Victober! Yes, you read that right. Despite my computer’s many attempts to auto correct me, Victober is a thing.
To celebrate the cosiest of months, we at Pile of Books will be going back to the years 1837-1901, better known as the Victorian Age. It was a time of great fashion and even greater literature.
Beginning October 1st, we will have a display at the shop offering various novels from that period, including the greats such as Charles Dickens, the Brontë sisters, Oscar Wilde and George Eliot, just to name a few. But hopefully you’ll find an author or novel you haven’t heard of or read before.
Among the display, there will be 5 categories (with a bonus 6th one that will be a surprise!). There will be 1-2 books per category, and those specific books will be 10% off, only through the month of October.
The idea is to read as many categories as you can, but of course if you read one or two, you’ve still participated in Victober.
Starting September 29th, I will post a blog on here every Monday, discussing a book from one of the categories. You can comment your thoughts, experiences, or even suggestions for next year! It’ll be like an online book club.
The following categories and books are:
The Short Novel/Novella: Silas Marner by George Eliot
Female Author: Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë
Gothic: The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde or The Turn of the Screw by Henry James (yes, I know he was technically American, but he lived and died in England so… let it go.)
The Longer Novel: Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
The Lesser Known Novel: Elizabeth and her German Garden by Elizabeth von Arnim
Now of course, this isn’t university. But we hope you see this as a fun way to get into Victorian literature, if you aren’t a huge fan already! I am also aware that a lot of these books are interchangeable, so you could read one book and have covered multiple categories. But there’s no prizes for reading the most so…
Remember to look out for the blog posts and take part in the online book club!
Happy Reading!
