It’s my favourite time of year. Yes, I love the changing colours, the cooler winds, the rain and the being able to wear a sweater without wanting to die.
But what I love most? Diving back into Victorian literature. There is just something so cozy about returning to our favourite classics or discovering new ones. Just being able to slow down with our reading. We all know Victorian literature is not always the most… fast paced. And that is a good thing. We need that now more than ever. I could do with some rolling hills in the country side, a bit of gossip around a hearth, and painstakingly detailed description of a parlour.
So let yourself slow down this month. Read slower. Savour the writing and how it makes you feel. I don’t know about you, but I have a tendency to rush through books. I admit, I have FOMO. What other book could I be reading? What am I missing? How many books can I read in a month? But what if instead I just… took my time? Old books make you do that.
So let’s celebrate the changing of the seasons with the permission to slow down. To enjoy the little things, like a good chapter, a cup of perfectly steeped tea, or the sound of rain right when you open your novel. Feel the excitement of getting to know a new world and a new cast of characters. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet your new favourite one?
This month, at Pile of Books, we’ll give you a chance to discover the world of Victorian literature, whether you’re a newcomer or a repeat visitor, as well as events where you can chat with other readers, drink some tea, eat some scones and share your favourite works with us.
I’m really looking forward to this month, and I hope you’ll have a slow, fun with us.
Happy Reading,
Bryanna & The Ink Drinkers
